Winter is now upon us and though El Nino has had it’s warming effects on most of us, there are still chilly nights ahead. Many homes have gas fireplaces but many still have the traditional wood burning areas that keep the room cozy. Below are a few tips on how to make sure that your fireplace is as energy efficient as possible during the winter months.
- Look into having your chimney cleaned by a certified chimney sweep to prevent creosote build up. The cleaner the chimney, the more energy efficient it is.
- Make sure there are no areas around the glass doors that have leak potential. When a fireplace is not in use, there’s no reason to heat the great outdoors from your den.
- Have a fan that recycles the warm air back into the room. This way your sure to enjoy the heat to it’s maximum potential.
- When you’re not using the fireplace close your damper. A sure way to watch your utility dollars go out of the roof.
